First, the Lord tells him to hide by a stream called Cherith east of the Jordan River, where ravens will feed him. There a poor widow will feed him from a miraculous supply of grain and oil. In this season of hiding, the Lord graciously cares for Elijah at every turn. At the end of these years without rain, Elijah calls a national contest on Mount Carmel between the Lord God, creator of heaven and earth, and the wicked pagan gods of Baal and Asherah.
In other words, Elijah is depressed out of his mind. In this season of hiding, the Lord sends an angel to revive him and give him his final instructions, including appointing his successor, Elisha. The prophet Elijah ranks right up there with Moses as one of the most dramatic prophets of the Lord. After several days on the run, Elijah collapses — exhausted, lonely, frightened, and feeling utterly defeated. In his desperation, he foolishly begs the Lord to take his life.
The primary significance of Elijah lies in the fact that he was an early champion of the idea that there is one god and one god only. Significantly, Elijah did not initially proclaim that the true God was Jehovah, only that there could be only one true God, and that He would make himself known to those who opened their hearts.
Elijah is quoted as saying:. The story of Elijah is key to the historical development of monotheism itself and to the belief that mankind can and should have a personal relationship with that monotheistic God. This is a clear statement of monotheism that was historically revolutionary at the time, and one that would change history. Elijah's teachings established the idea that a higher moral law should be the basis for earthly law.
In his conflicts with Ahab and the pagan leaders of the time, Elijah argued that the law of a higher God must be the basis for guiding mankind's conduct and that morality must be the basis for a practical legal system. Religion then became a practice based on reason and principle rather than frenzy and mystical ecstasy. This idea of laws based on moral principle continues to this day. After those events, Ahab tried to get a neighbor, Naboth, to sell him a vineyard to use as a vegetable garden. Elijah came and condemned Ahab, prophesying his death and the destruction of his family line.
Calling down fire on soldiers 2 Kings 1. In response, Ahaziah sent 50 troops to collect Elijah, who called down fire from heaven to kill them. Another set of 50 troops were sent, Elijah called down fire from heaven again. When the third set of 50 troops arrived, the captain begged Elijah for mercy. Elijah repeated the message that he had given through the intermediary, and Ahaziah died shortly afterward as punishment for not trusting God.
Both times, Elisha replied he did know, but asks them not to speak about it. Finally, at the Jordon, Elijah made the water part, and the two men walked across. Then, a chariot of fire pulled by fiery horses appeared, coming between Elijah and Elisha. My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel! Elisha then took the cloak Elijah had used to part the water, went back to the Jordon, and made the water part in the same way that Elijah did 2 Kings There are debates among Revelation scholars about whether both men will eventually die.
Specifically, the argument goes that since Hebrews says that all humans must die once, Elijah and Enoch are the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation who come at the End Times, get killed, and then return to heaven.
It is worth noting that Enoch is commended in Hebrews for his great faith. He continued to serve God well after that and passed on his learning to Elisha. The fact that God honored Elijah in spite of his doubts reminds us that in the end, God will decide our legacies. Being fallible human beings, we will all struggle.
Regardless of our struggles, doubts, or mistakes, God loves us and uses us in unexpected ways. Read the full scripture text of the Bible story of Elijah below and discover Articles, Videos, and Sermons relating to his life!
