9th gate who is the girl

Considering the "satanic" angle of the film, I think it is just a devilish little detail from the Director. Similar to how Harry "hairy"? Angel realizes the pun of Louis Cypher's name as Lucifer, so too "LCF" refers to a name which can be read as " bringer of light. Is he going to heaven? Or is the Ninth Gate perhaps a doorway out from the Kingdom of Shadows, i. Was this mark a part of her spell to help him stay on the path to the Ninth Gate? We can only speculate. About the only analysis that I can even find on that portion is from this website , where it is compared to the Qabalah or Kabbala and the Tree of Life.

I don't remember there being much of an explanation in the original book, "The Club Dumas". Earlier, when Corso first expressed his admiration and gratitude to the girl for fighting for him against the albino down by the river, we saw the bond of Higher Feeling growing between them. It was at this point that the girl looked lovingly at Corso and drew with her fingers three vertical lines on his forehead with her own blood, the central line extending down his nose.

There is a long spiritual tradition of marking the forehead as a sign of spiritual protection and initiation in both Eastern and Western traditions and three vertical marks on the forehead is the traditional Hindu sign of initiation of those who worship God in the form of Vishnu, the Preserver, whose qualities like those of Chesed are kindness and mercy. Such marks are also worn as a reminder of the consecration of the body as the temple of the Spirit, and in Corso's case might represent a sign of his initiation into Higher Feeling and the realm of the Soul.

In the context of the Tree of Life, the three symbolic marks might also refer to the three Transcendent Creative energies of the Supernal Triad which, when the body is superimposed on the Tree, are located in the head. The girl begins as a symbolic figure who models for him the qualities of the Soul which he will gradually grow into, but once Corso has achieved the union of his ego and Soul, the inter-dimensional figure of the girl remains a symbol of the non-dual Spirit.

It is his union with her in this capacity which will carry him across the Abyss and into union with the Spirit with the opening of the Ninth Gate. It could be the mark of the beast. As to why 3, not 4 like in the movie, it would be interesting if like the story portrayed, one needed to compare three sources--the book, the screenplay, the movie--for esoteric meaning.

The one that is different in this case the movie has the true meaning. Also, because it's been noted above there's actually not as much as one might expect on the internet concerning all of the esoteric symbolism in the movie.

So, I'm going to dump my observation here: he actually experiences all of the true "images" during the course of the movie. It's not head knowledge or a ritual for him.

It is his lived experience. This is because of a secret blood pact that takes place. It resembles the "I am you and you are me" in this movie.

ChristianRau, I can understand why you put the title of the movie in the body of the question, but why did you remove it from the question title?

And let's not forget Mrs. Polanski herself, Emmanuelle Seigner in a very interesting role. As for the poor reviews this film generally got, I must say I am stumped. There is not a single weak moment; the proceedings glide by smoothly, and are more than intriguing. Suffice to say, it's a very well made film and a fascinating experience. Never mind, that some so-called critics have lambasted it for some unanswered questions and ambiguities in the story.

They are probably the kind who like everything packaged in a neat order with ends all tied up, and are averse to enigma and ambiguity. My viewpoint is that there may be untied ends and unanswered questions The Ninth Gate is the kind of movie that you would wanna watch again.. I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. The girl is Mesostopheles, it is said in Roman Catholic literature that after Lucifer fell from grace so did Mesostopheles follow and was offered by Lucifer to be his 2nd in command. Here's my take of it partly answered earlier by others : The girl is a devil sent to guide "worthy" individuals to the ninth gate.

She admires Corso's qualities - his lack of scruples, his self-centeredness, and cynicism. She has "fallen in love" with him and acts as his guardian angel. The Dumas Club, the book the film is based on, develops this romance further. That book itself is based on another book, The Devil In Love, written in French in the s, in which a neophyte dabbler in black magic summons a demon, which falls in love with him and assumes the form of a woman in order to win him over.

Corso enters the Ninth Gate, attaining the immortality and power Balkan sought. That would have spoiled the effect.

Rather the devil you don't know I didn't read every single post on the way down the list. And I'm not going to, for a few reasons, the most important being that this is a movie and everyone is going to draw from it what they will. That said, I've spent a fair bit of time researching demonology and Christian mythology around the world pick up the three books in Jeffrey Burton Russell's series about human understanding of evil and the Devil if this stuff interests you.

It's dry, but worth reading. Anyhow, it seems that the whole "9 Gates" scenerio is a slightly more modern re-evaluation of old folk tales with a bit of Lovecraft thrown in. If you read Dracula the novel by Bram Stoker you'll catch two bits, in chapters 18 and 23 if I'm not mistaken. These two brief excerpts deal with Dracula's attendence of the Schoolmancer, look it up on Wikipedia. Only ten scholars are admitted at a time, and when the course of learning has expired and nine of them are released to return to their homes, the tenth scholar is detained by the devil as payment These "cheats" however, wouldn't allow you to break the laws of physics or other natural laws, just bend them a bit.

It certainly wouldn't put you on par with God, and when Balkan references having absolute power, such as the Devil, he's a tad mistaken.

It seems likely that the 9th Gate is a metaphor for learning the "shortcuts" to life, similar to the Schoolmancer. So yes, you would attain what would seem to be extra-human abilities.

I'm not sure that flying is one of them, but hey, we'll go with it.
